Social support plays a critical role in promoting mental health, particularly among elderly individuals who may face isolation, depression, and anxiety due to age-related challenges (World Health Organization [WHO], 2023). Social support systems in healthcare settings, including family involvement, caregiver support, and peer relationships, can help improve the emotional well-being of elderly patients by providing them with a sense of security, belonging, and companionship.
At State Specialist Hospital, Maiduguri, elderly patients in nursing care often experience social isolation, which can exacerbate mental health issues. While family members may not always be able to provide regular support due to geographical or financial constraints, healthcare institutions are increasingly recognizing the importance of establishing robust social support systems within the hospital environment. However, there is limited research on the direct effect of these support systems on the mental health of elderly patients.
This study aims to investigate the effect of social support systems on the mental health of elderly patients in nursing care at State Specialist Hospital, Maiduguri, and explore ways to enhance these systems to improve patients' mental well-being.
Social isolation and lack of emotional support are significant risk factors for poor mental health among elderly patients. At State Specialist Hospital, Maiduguri, elderly patients in long-term nursing care may not receive adequate social support, which can lead to feelings of loneliness, depression, and anxiety (Ogunyemi et al., 2023). Despite the potential benefits of social support systems, these mechanisms may be insufficient or poorly structured, potentially contributing to the deterioration of patients' mental health.
This study aims to evaluate the effect of social support systems on the mental health of elderly patients in nursing care and identify strategies to enhance these systems for improved patient well-being.
This study will focus on elderly patients in nursing care at State Specialist Hospital, Maiduguri, and will assess the impact of social support on their mental health. Limitations may include difficulty in measuring subjective experiences of social support and potential variations in the availability of support across different patient groups.
